St. Michael-Albertville Senior High School Reviews

We moved our four children into this school district in 2001. We found STMA to be a great place for our kids. the last will graduate this spring. The administration and the teachers have been flexible in finding ways to support their various special needs. The extra curricular activities are excellent. I highly recommend STMA.

I know that this is supposed to be a parent rating, but I was a student in STMA and I actually walked in the halls and attended the classes. I was not 'popular', just you average student. I love STMA. Before I moved here my previous school experience were horrible at best. In STMA, my family found acceptance for differences. They looked at each student and took them as they were and figured out how to best help them. STMA has it's issues, it is high school after all, but when I compare my experience to that of my friends from college STMA was great. There was not much fighting (I remember one fight ever). The extracurricular programs and sports are excellent. It was cool to be smart, artistic and/or athletic. One was not better than the other. STMA is a great school, and a great place to live.

I am a parent of 4 that have been in STMA for 7 years. I have 2 in the High School, 1 in the Middle School and 1 in one of the 3 Elementaries. I am honestly very shocked to hear someof the comments. We have had a great experience at STMA. 3 of my children have ADHD... when we moved to the area they were struggeling academically. All the teachers and staff at the different schools woked so hard with my kids and helped them get on programs and classes that would help them succeed... Which they have! My oldest is now a Junior in HS but has progressed so far that she is posting out and getting her first year of college for free! I have loved all the teachers and the effort they put into my kids! I would reccomend STMA to anyone!

It is really hard to know where to begin. I don't usually do reviews like this, but feel compelled after years of seeing this school claim to be progressing, when really it is just adrift. I think it starts at the top. A real lack of leadership. A superintendant who claims to be concerned, but has kept on individuals who should not be in positions of responsibiltiy and hired others who really didn't know what they were doing. They try to use manipulative test data to prove that they are progressing, but in reality they are barely above average in test scores. And some of their test scores, especially in language arts, are well below average. The math curriculum is confusing. The parent portal is really useless. Discipline and grading are inconsistent. There is an insider culture of mediocrity. Don't go here.

We ignored a negative review on this sight about the STMA School District thinking it was just one parents perspective. However, after the past 1 1/2 years at STMA, my advice to any parent looking at this district is to go somewhere else! The bullying in this district is out of control and is NOT effectively dealt with by administration or the majority of teachers in a proactive or reactive manner. Yes, they have 'anti-bullying workshops' for students and staff; and thats as far as it goes. Anti-bullying is not truly taught or reinforced any further than the workshop. As if the learning environment itself is not negative enough, teachers/admistration are not open to real parent participation in their childs academic success. If your child has a different learning style (not related to special needs), this district is not willing to do what is necessary to ensure their success.

I strongly encourage anyone considering this school district to talk to parents who currently have children enrolled there. You will get a much more accurate picture of the current issues and problems the schools are experiencing from parents or students. In my opinion, persons at the school administrative levels are making a considerable amount of poor decisions regarding discipline, teacher hiring, finances, and education in general. Our children have attended the schools in this district for a couple years. We are deeply disappointed with the follow through on the bullying and education policies and have chosen to remove our children from the school, as are many parents. The administration is either unwilling or unable to effectively address the many long-standing issues brought forth by parents and students and the learning environment is suffering. Please exercise EXTREME caution when considering this school as a possible choice for your child/ren.
